Fall Bonus Tiles

One of the main differences when it comes to fall Mahjong is the design of some of the tiles in the set. A typical Mahjong set contains two sets of four bonus tiles for a total of eight. These are, usually, flower and season tiles. In fall Mahjong, these designs are changed, so that flower tiles are things like acorns and mushrooms, and the season tiles a variety of seasonal fallen leaves, such as maple.

How to play Mahjong

Now, in case you’re not familiar with the game, let’s look att how to play fall Mahjong, starting with the basics.
Click and match tiles

Click and match tiles

Fall Mahjong is a tile matching game, and so most of the gameplay involves clicking and matching tiles on the screen. Other than the bonus tiles, all of the 144 tiles in the set have a single matching tile which you must find to remove the two of them from the board.
Unlocking tile pairs

Unlocking tile pairs

As you might expect, though, not every tile is available from the start of the game. The majority of the challenge in fall Mahjong is about unlocking tile pairs in order to make them available. If a tile is blocked at its left and right, or if there is a tile on top, those tiles must first be removed.
Choosing tile pairs

With that in mind, choosing the right tile pairs is really important to play properly in fall Mahjong games. It is entirely possible to lose and get stuck in Mahjong if you aren’t careful—though we’ll come back to this in the strategy.

Finally, the bonus tiles work a bit differently, as mentioned. There are eight of them in total, in two sets of four. One set includes the acorn, hedgehog, umbrella, and mushroom tile—these can all be matched interchangeably. The fall season tiles are four leaves, which again can be matched interchangeably.

Mahjong tips

Now, let’s turn our attention to tips and tricks for winning the game. Fall Mahjong can be a bit tricky to master, but it is simple enough to pick up, so you’ve got to be applying the strategies and tips if you want to win — rather than just playing pairs at random.

1. Playing carefully

The most important general tip you must take on board when playing fall Mahjong is to always play carefully. There are elements of both luck and strategy in the game, but you can never rely on pure luck to win the game — if you don’t play carefully, you will always lose. Think about whether making a given move frees up a new pair or not—if it doesn’t, there’s probably a more advantageous move to be made.

2. Remembering the board

Above all, Mahjong fall is a game of memory. As you go along playing more and more games, you will start to realize that your memory skills are quickly improving. The more you focus on this, the quicker the improvement will be. You need to be able to have some sense of the state of the board so that you know where a tile’s match is when it becomes available.

3. Think ahead

Following on from that, then, you must think multiple steps ahead before you make any move in autumn Mahjong. Before you make a move, think about the implications it will have for your next two, three, or even four moves. Again, this will become more natural as you go along.

Mahjong Strategies

Let’s now look at some more specific strategies for improving your Mahjong autumn game.

1. Focus on freeing tiles

When you start a game of fall Mahjong, most of the tiles will not be available for play. There will be a lot of high stacks and long rows of tiles which you can’t access. Your best strategy, at first, is to focus on freeing these tiles especially in these rows and stacks—this gives you the greatest possible range of moves.

2. Delaying moves

One big and common mistake that players make in fall Mahjong is making moves impulsively. At least when you’re first playing, you should more or less always delay making moves until you’re sure it’s the most advantageous one available—otherwise you will end up stuck!

3. Repeat play

Finally, the best thing you can do is just play lots of games of fall Mahjong. The more you play, the more your memory and skills will improve, so this is a really important part of your improvement strategy.

Fall Mahjong is a really fun way to play the game, then, whether you’re trying it new for the first time or you’re a seasoned player. It brings interesting design twists to the classic format, and armed with our tips and tricks, you’ll be winning games consistently in no time and you’ll feel the huge benefit!
